The average purchasing price of Nokia and Motorola mobile phones may crash next year as there are indications that the two world leading mobile handset makers have confirmed plans to set up assembly plants in Nigeria.
Minister of Communication, Engr. Femi Anibaba stated this at the 5th International Nigerian Telecommunication, Strategic Conference in Abuja last week, saying the aim is to reduce high cost of importing telephone handsets.
“Government has realised the need for local content in the industry to ensure self-sustaining and adaptable system to our local environment”, he told the gathering, adding: “Government is partnering with willing investors to establish local manufacturing and assembly plants which will reduce high dependence on importation.
“For example, Nokia is embarking on an initiative to establish an assembly plant for mobile handsets and other accessories, while Motorola is also moving towards doing the same in Nigeria.”
Anibaba also reminded the gathering that already, ZTE, a Chinese company has established a mobile phone assembly plant in the nation’s capital, Abuja.
Anibaba enthused that Pyramid Research findings indicates that Nigeria is home to one out of every 10 phones in Africa today.
