Familiarity breeds contempt, they say. But in postal parlance, familiarity is no liability but an advantage.
The cash registers of Postal Department have been ringing ever since TRAI made it mandatory for mobile service providers to ensure that an address furnished by applicants were authentic.
Mobile service providers knowing how cumbersome the exercise was, decided to outsource the burden on a institution, known for its integrity and credibility.
The choice narrowed down to, who else, the ubiquitous postman for their impeccable familiarity of the local neighborhood.
“A postman is a data bank and thus an address if bogus will be promptly detected,” explains Senior Superintendent of Post offices Mangalore Division Visalatchy.
Mangalore Postal Division has so far received 3,000 applications for address verification from Hutch mobile service provider.
The department takes only six days to verify address and a week if addressee is located outside the city in Udupi or Puttur.
Displaying a document Visalatchy said, the certificate authenticating the address will be endorsed jointly by the postman and jurisdictional post office.
According to a MoU, a postman receives an incentive of Rs two for every address verified and faces stiff action for any intentional or unintentional wrongdoing.
“Of the 3,000 applications, over 2,500 applications have been verified and returned,” Visalatchy informs. For a difference, the customers also get expert guidance from the vendor.
