Clarify single frequency allocation, says TDSAT

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has sought clarifications from the Centre on the use of single frequency allocations to private FM radio companies under the second phase of expansion.
Responding to the petition filed by Mumbai-based Radio Mid Day West, whose existing frequency 92.5 FM will be changed under the single-frequency allocation to 94.3 Mhz due to technical reasons, TDSAT asked the government to clarify the rational behind the move.

In its plea, Radio Mid Day West submitted that the government cannot withdraw a frequency except in public interest and national security. “92.5 is identified with Radio Mid Day’s Go FM as 98.3 Mhz is for Radio Mirchi. Changing our frequency will affect our business,” counsels representing Radio Mid Day submitted before the tribunal.

In August, the wireless planning and coordination (WPC) cell of department of telecommunications (DoT) gave its approval to the use of a single frequency for companies holding multi-city licences.

The current change of Radio Mid Day West frequencies in Mumbai and other five centres is necessary, as there has to be a separation of 0.8 Mhz between two stations.

“Since the separation will be less than 0.8 Mhz in Mumbai, Radio Mid Day’s frequency will have to be changed to the newly allotted 94.3 across all its centres,” the government’s counsel pleaded before TDSAT.

The case will come up for hearing on October 5, two days before Big 92.7 FM launches in Mumbai. It holds 44 licenses and has already launched stations in Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai.
